Q1 Plasma Shipments Fall 22%30 Apr, 2009 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Economic uncertainty continued to wreak havoc on consumer electronics as shipments of plasma panels fell 22% to 2.8 million units during the first quarter, compared to 3.5 million units in the previous-year period, according to a new report.
Plasma revenues fell 36% as retailers discounted units to contend with declining demand.
DisplaySearch, a unit of The NPD Group, said the declines, underscored by Pioneer Electronics’ departure from the plasma market, revolved primarily around 32-inch panel shipments, followed by 42-inch and 50-inch panel units.
Indeed, 1080p resolution panel shipments dropped 3% to 22% market share as retailers attempted to entice consumers with lower priced models featuring 720p resolution.
“The result was weaker than anticipated shipments as the number of brands consolidates,” DisplaySearch said in the report.
