New State Power Policy Could Cut LCD-TV Energy Use 50%

Proposed California energy efficiency standards for new high-definition televisions with screen sizes 58 inches and smaller could reduce energy use 50%, according to a new report.

The California Energy Commission has mandated that televisions use 33% less energy by 2011 and 49% less energy by 2013. The commission said the reductions could save consumers upwards of $250 over the life of a TV.

Increasing sales of high-definition flat-screen TVs, larger screen sizes and the growing number of TVs per household all contribute to greater electricity consumption, according to the California Energy Commission (CEC).

High-definition TVs, along with digital video recorders, Blu-ray Disc and DVD players and cable boxes, consume 10% of a home's electricity.

El Segundo, Calif.-based iSuppli Corp. said if the 200 million LCD TVs projected to be shipped in 2012 complied with the proposed CEC standards, kilowatt usage would drop to 64.4 billion hours compared to nearly 127 billion hours currently consumed.

The Consumer Electronics Association says the proposed regulations would result in higher prices for consumers, job and tax revenue losses in the state.

Randy Lawson, senior analyst with iSuppli, said the proposed CEC regulations are similar to current federal EPA Energy Star 3.0 and 4.0 guidelines.

“Television makers already have been working to cut the power consumption of their products so they can earn the coveted Energy Star label,” Lawson said.

The analyst said a recent survey found that 46.1% of consumers in the third quarter said green factors such as energy efficiency influenced their TV purchasing decisions.

“Consumers increasingly are aware of power consumption issues, and are likely to gravitate toward sets that use less electricity,” Lawson said.

There are an estimated 35 million TVs in California consuming 8,772 gigawatt hours annually. A gigawatt hour is equivalent to having 40,000 televisions on for five hours a day for an entire year.
