Eutelsat Launches First Dedicated Ultra HD Channel

14 Jan, 2013 By: Chris Tribbey

The United Kingdom’s Eutelsat Communications has launched the first dedicated Ultra HD channel for Europe, with the first 4K transmissions (four times the resolution of HDTV) already being broadcast.

Eutelsat's new channel operates in progressive mode at 50 frames per second, is encoded in MPEG-4 and is transmitted at 40 mbps over four streams.

"This new step toward 4K continues Eutelsat's longstanding commitment to achieving new broadcast milestones that over the last 20 years have included digital TV, HDTV and 3D," said Jean-François Leprince-Ringuet, Eutelsat’s commercial director. "Early and close collaboration between all players in the broadcast chain will be a key success factor for this new revolution."
