Anyone needing a fix of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” should turn to Larry David’s latest project, Clear History. The film features David at his improvisational best with an all-star ensemble cast who adeptly keeps up with him.
David stars as Nathan, a long-haired, bearded marketing guru who quits his job because he refuses to market the company’s new electric car, the Howard, on account of the name. Giving up his shares in the company, Nathan proves to be wrong and misses out on the billion dollars he would have made. As the car reaches national success, Nathan becomes a national joke.
Losing his wife, his house and his reputation, Nathan changes his name to Rolly, cuts his hair, shaves his beard and moves to Martha’s Vineyard to start a new life.
Ten years later, Nathan’s former boss, the now hugely successful Will (Jon Hamm), buys a home in Martha’s Vineyard, setting Rolly into a tailspin.
Written as a story outline by David and the writers behind “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” the comedy’s tone feels like the series. Rolly is pretty similar to David’s neurotic role in “Curb,” and he’s surrounded by offbeat characters hilariously played by such actors as Danny McBride, Eva Mendes, J.B. Smoove, Bill Hader, Liev Schreiber, a nearly unrecognizable Michael Keaton and others.
Even though the film might remind viewers of the show, that isn’t a bad thing at all. With a new story to tell and a stellar cast, the movie is just different enough but also just as enjoyable as the series.
