9 Jun, 2009 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Boutique audio and video manufacturer Harman Kardon June 9 unveiled its first Blu-ray Disc player, the BDP 1, for the North American market.

Considered the Herman Miller in consumer electronics, Harman Kardon specializes in high-end home theater systems, including receivers, speakers, tuners and digital media centers.

The Profile 2.0 BDP 1 retails for $499 and features Bonus View (picture-in-picture), BD-Live (Internet connectivity), advanced audio codec support and 1080p resolution playback, in addition to front-panel USB jack for additional BD-Live memory or MP3 or JPEG file playback.

The unit also includes Ethernet, HDMI 1.3a, coaxial and optical audio outputs, in addition to analog audio outputs.

A European model, the BDP 10, launched last month.

“The introduction of our first Blu-ray Disc player balances our portfolio of home products, which have always featured great sound but, now offer crystal-clear video playback,” said Christopher Dragon, director of consumer and field marketing for Harman.
