VHS Is Surely Dead After 20052 May, 2005 By: Stephanie Prange
In our issue last week, we sited a source that said Target would phase out VHS cassettes before the fourth quarter. I hate to say I told you so, but I know I've written a few columns about the shrinking VHS section at the local Target.
I said that after Easter things would shrink considerably, and they did. The last time I checked, the local Target had cut a section of VHS — leaving only kidvids in the cassette format.
While many have talked about the end of VHS, I think this is the final nail in the coffin. When a mass merchant such as Target pulls the plug, others are sure to follow. Look for Kmart and Wal-Mart to also cut back on the format.
There will still be a niche market for cassettes, which independent video retailers will no doubt take advantage of, but the days of VHS are numbered.
