Music DVD a Channel Along with Download

6 Mar, 2006 By: Stephanie Prange

New music DVD releases jumped 17.4% in 2005 from 2004, according to The DVD Release Report. That's despite a download industry that has grown by leaps and bounds in the music arena.

Many music suppliers are talking about music DVD's complementary function in the overall music market. In any artist's collection of products, music DVD has a place, suppliers say.

While singles may be the purview of the download business, concerts and behind-the-scenes extras are fodder for Music DVD. With different content, the two can peacefully coexist.

It makes one wonder if that isn't the future of the packaged-media movie business as well. Will there be certain content (say, new-release movies that deserve just one viewing) that will be the purview of the video-on-demand business and certain content for packaged-media collectors?
