DVD: A Forgotten Staple

20 Nov, 2006 By: Stephanie Prange

Walk into your local Target, Costco or Wal-Mart, and you'll be likely to see a large section devoted to DVD. Go to the register and several endcaps will also be devoted to the digital video disc.

Certainly, many of the titles are around $10, not high-priced fare. But prices for TV DVD sets hover around $30 and the entire series come close to $200.

Why then is this industry so down on its star product?

The answer is growth. If a business isn't growing exponentially, it's dying in Wall Street eyes. But Main Street and I beg to differ. I think that many have looked past the consumer and retailer to what they would like the consumer to buy, rather than what the consumer is actually interested in. In a recent survey on our Web site, DVD beat out Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD as the preferred format.

Don't give up on DVD.
