Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade make a hilarious foursome of crimefighters shaking things up in the small town of Glenview, Ohio, in The Watch.
Chipper Costco manager Evan (Stiller) decides to form a neighborhood watch group after an employee mysteriously dies while working the night shift in the store. A ragtag group of citizens answer his call to form “The Watch”: Franklin (Hill), an offbeat slacker with vengeance in mind; Bob (Vaughn), a guy’s guy looking for reprieve from his wife and rebellious teenage daughter; and Jamarcus (Ayoade), a peculiar newcomer who wants to get to know his community better.
While the film could have gone a number of ways, The Watch proves just the right blend of comedy and sci-fi as the guys find themselves in quite the predicament when they must defend Earth from an impending alien invasion.
Of course, the police department, especially snarky Sgt. Bressman (Will Forte), thinks the neighborhood watch guys are lunatics. After the team finds and pummels the alien responsible for the deaths in the community, they learn that aliens have inhabited local residents’ bodies to infiltrate the planet. Everyone is a target, and you’ll be surprised at who actually is an alien in disguise.
It all comes to a head when The Watch discovers the extraterrestrials have taken over Costco’s basement as their headquarters. The team seizes the opportunity to kick some alien butt and earn the respect that they rightfully deserve.
The ensemble cast of funnymen bounces well off each other (Vaughn can do no wrong in my book), which makes for an enjoyable and quite rich reel of deleted scenes and bloopers. Rounding out the bonus material are the “Alien Invasions & You” and “Casting the Alien” featurettes.
