“I am pretty much interested in any project that involves chimps,” says actor and “Saturday Night Live” regular Andy Samberg in one of the extras for Space Chimps.
Apparently, he is not the only one. From Every Which Way But Loose, King Kong and MVP: Most Valuable Primate to Dunston Checks In and Planet of the Apes, movie monkeys are a long-standing Hollywood tradition. Where were our lovable primates left to go? Into space, of course.
Samberg voices Ham III, grandson of Ham I, the first chimp in space. However, unlike his primate predecessor, Ham III is perfectly happy to work in a circus. One day the government asks Ham III to team up with Luna (Hines) and Titan (Warburton), to shoot for the stars and head into uncharted space territory.
There, Ham and his crew find new alien life and discover that the mission was not all they were led to believe. That leaves the not-so-merry band of monkeys scratching their heads about how to get home.
Space Chimps received a small summer release, thanks in part to Fox picking the same premiere date as The Dark Knight. Overall, this barrel of CGI isn’t as impressive as Wall-E or The Incredibles, but it will surely entertain the same audience — as long as they are under the age of 8.
Unfortunately, Fox didn’t exactly go bananas when it came to the extras. Aside from a Fox Movie Channel featurette, the disc just has a series of TV spots and trailers.
