HBO Documentary films takes on the issue of obesity in America with The Weight of the Nation, which hits DVD as a three-disc set July 24 (order date June 19) at $19.97. The four-part series aired on HBO in May, the culmination of a three-year effort to bring together the country’s leading research institutions in a national initiative that focuses attention on individual and collective health.
Each part focuses on a particular topic: “Consequences” examines the scope of the obesity epidemic and the health consequences of being overweight; “Choices” reveals the science behind obesity and weight loss; “Children in Crisis” documents the impact the epidemic is having on America’s children; and “Challenges” examines the major forces behind the epidemic.
In addition, the DVD will include 10 bonus shorts that focus on diseases and conditions linked to obesity, as well as actions taken to stem the crisis. Also included will be a 20-page booklet with an overview of the documentary and observations from experts.
The Weight of the Nation was produced in association with the Institute of Medicine, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the National Institutes of Health in partnership with the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation and Kaiser Permanente.
