NeuLion Acquires Saffron Digital

NeuLion, a technology product and service provider specializing in broadcasting, distribution and monetization of live and on-demand digital video content, has acquired London-based Saffron Digital.

Financial terms of the deal, which creates a combined workforce of 600 (including about 50 from Saffron), were not disclosed. Saffron CEO Jason Keane will reportedly join the company in an executive role. The new company will drop the Saffron name and operate under the NeuLion brand.

Saffron’s digital platform has been integrated by subscription video-on-demand, electronic sellthrough and ad-supported VOD platforms, including Carrefour, BT, Deutsche Telecom, ITV, Tribeca Shortlist and Vidity, among others.

Synergies between the two combined companies include reducing the number of third-party vendors; set-up time for new OTT and TV Everywhere platforms; support for all video formats, including 4K Ultra HD; and DRM implementation.

Specifically, NeuLion has specialized in live sports streaming while Saffron has focused on transactional video.

“The OTT video market is accelerating rapidly in the U.S., Europe and other parts of the world, and represents a large and growing addressable market for the combined company,” NeuLion CEO Roy Reichbach said in a statement.  “The integrated company can offer owners and rights holders of sports and entertainment a complete end to end solution for both live and on demand content that is a clear market leader.”
