DWA: 'Home' Entertainment is Where the Profit Is

DreamWorks Animation Nov. 5 said animated hit Home generated 4.7 million third-quarter (ended Sept. 30) unit shipments at retail, in addition to $49.7 million in theatrical revenue. The title generated $386 million at the global box office since its March 27 theatrical debut. Home was released on Digital HD June 26 and packaged media July 28.

Indeed, Home helped drive up feature film revenue 11% to $158 million from $142.3 million during the previous-year period. 

Penguins of Madagascar contributed feature film segment revenue of $39.8 million in the quarter, primarily from domestic and international pay television. Through the end of the third quarter, the film reached an estimated 3.6 million home entertainment units sold worldwide, net of actual and estimated future returns.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 contributed feature film segment revenue of $7.4 million in the quarter, primarily from international pay-television and home entertainment. The film reached an estimated 8.9 million home entertainment units sold worldwide through the end of the third quarter, net of actual and estimated future returns.

Mr. Peabody & Sherman contributed feature film segment revenue of $2.6 million in the quarter, primarily from home entertainment. The film reached an estimated 4.2 million home entertainment units sold worldwide through the end of the third quarter, net of actual and estimated future returns.

Library titles contributed feature film segment revenue of $58.4 million in the quarter. Library revenue in the current quarter were driven by worldwide television and home entertainment revenue for a number of titles including The Croods and Turbo.
