'Ash vs. Evil Dead: The Complete First Season' Best-Selling Anchor Bay Disc Since 2010

Anchor Bay Home Entertainment’s Ash vs. Evil Dead: The Complete First Season is the distributor’s best-selling packaged-media release since 2010, according to Starz LLC.

Launched at retail Aug. 23, “Ash vs. Evil Dead” topped all previous first-week disc sales for an original series in the past six years, according to Starz, which didn’t disclose actual sales data.

In addition to operating a network of pay-TV channels, Starz LLC, which recently sold itself to Lionsgate for $4.4 billion, distributes packaged media, digital releases of proprietary content and The Weinstein Co. via Anchor Bay under the Starz Distribution umbrella.

Starz Distribution reported a third-quarter (ended Sept. 30) operating loss of $2.5 million on revenue of $60.9 million. The distributor cited a dearth of Weinstein releases in the quarter, as well as a $2.8 million increase (to $26.2 million) in cash paid for investment in films and TV programs due to timing of payments under the distribution agreement with the studio.

The distributor reported operating income of $900,000 on revenue of $65.6 million during the previous-year period.

Separately, Starz said its nascent over-the-top video streaming service topped 1 million subscribers, driven in part by the third season of original series “Power,” and consumer feedback from Amazon Channels, a platform (formerly called Streaming Partners Program) enabling third-party OTT video services to market themselves to Prime members.

“The strong performance of our Amazon and Starz app initiatives complements the Starz Networks business with core distributors,” CEO Chris Albrecht said in a statement.
