Global Media Exchange (GMX), a unit of Santa Monica, Calif.-based Ascent Media, acquired inDplay, a San Francisco-based online movie licensing and download platform that will relaunch in 2009 as www.thexchange.net.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
In the interim inDplay.com will continue as a platform that allows independent filmmakers, TV producers and distributors to streamline content transactions and provide rights management across multiple platforms, including both packaged and electronic media.
Genres include action/thriller/horror, documentaries, romantic comedies/chick flicks, high-definition and foreign titles.
Global Media Exchange is expected to continue inDplay’s partnership with Amazon’s CustomFlix.com that provides DVD authoring and replication for independent films.
“By acquiring a key IP (Internet protocol) and learning from their development history, we are enabling GMX to take on new business sooner,” said Steve Lyons, SVP of business development for GMX.
