Epix Bows Movie Channel for Blockbuster Movie Pass

5 Jan, 2012 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Pay-TV platform Epix Jan. 5 launched a new movie channel that allows Dish Network’s Blockbuster Movie Pass subscribers to access a greater selection of streaming titles in high-definition.

Dubbed Epix 3, the new channel expands the number of new and catalog titles Movie Pass subs can watch stream on TV or computer with a broadband Internet connection through their Dish satellite TV membership. Movies currently available to stream include Rango, True Grit, Thor and Super 8, in addition to original comedies and music specials, among others.

Movie Pass, which launched October 2011, is a $10 premium to Dish monthly subscriptions that enables members to rent DVD/Blu-ray Disc movies at Blockbuster stores or by mail, in addition to accessing select titles via streaming online. While Blockbuster stores offer more than 100,000 titles for rent, its streaming catalog topped 3,000 titles at launch.

Separately, Epix launched Epix Drive-In (formerly called “The 3 from Epix”), a channel aimed at offering offbeat cult films, including titles from director Roger Corman, targeted toward younger audiences.

Titles include The Terminator, Child’s Play, Back To School, Rollerball and Teen Wolf, all uncut and uninterrupted. Corman titles include Battle Beyond the Stars, Bloodfist, Caged Heat, Carnosaur, Death Race 2000, Grand Theft Auto, Humanoids from the Deep, Rock n’ Roll High School and Slumber Party Massacre.

“Our goal is to bring the best entertainment to our viewers and provide them content they want, and we are pleased to continue working with Epix to offer more movie choices to our subscribers on Epix Drive-In and Epix 3,” said Dave Shull, SVP of programming for Dish.
