ZillionTV Working With Studio on Day-And-Date Streams

15 Jun, 2009 By: Chris Tribbey

ZillionTV is working with at least one studio to offer new releases in an ad-supported format on the same day titles are available on DVD and Blu-ray Disc, the company confirmed June 15.

A spokeswoman for the company said no additional details about windowless releases were immediately available and that an announcement could come in the next 30-45 days.

Sony, Universal, Warner and Disney have already reached agreements with Zillion TV to have some of their content available when the subscription-free service launches nationwide later this year. The service consists of a thin ‘Z’ bar that connects to an HDTV and comes with Ethernet, USB and HDMI ports. A 3MB connection is recommended for the service.

Users can rent, buy or watch content for free in an ad-supported format, depending on the content’s licensing agreement, via on-demand streaming. ZillionTV has more than 40 individual content agreements and deals with Internet service providers to stream the content.

When ZillionTV users select ad-supported content, the ads are geared toward that consumer’s interests, which they share with ZillionTV when they sign up for the service. Feature films could include a half dozen advertisements.

Russ Crupnick, entertainment analyst with The NPD Group, offered both glass-half-empty and half-full perspectives.

“When we survey consumers about what they want, day-and-date is one of the things that always excites them,” he said. “The challenge has been, are there enough ads to support the business model, especially in this economy?”
