Report: Tablets to Reach 57 Million by 20152 Feb, 2010 By: Billy Gil
The announcement of the Apple iPad marks the emerging market for tablet computing devices, which are forecasted to jump from about 4 million units shipped this year to 57 million annually by 2015, according to analysts at ABI Research.
“Apple’s iPad is not the first media tablet,” said senior ABI analyst Jeff Orr. “But it does help define this new device category.
“The main focus of media tablets is entertainment. A tablet will not replace a laptop, netbook or mobile phone but will remain an additional premium or luxury product for wealthy industrialized markets for at least several years.”
Tablets are devices with touchscreen interfaces, Wi-Fi compatibility, and video and game capabilities, and are five to 11 inches in size, according to ABI. Besides Apple, manufacturers such as Lenovo, HP and Asus produce tablets, some of which premiered at the 2010 International CES.
