Report: Mobile Entertainment Up11 Nov, 2008 By: Kyra Kudick
The use of portable entertainment devices is up, according to a recent report by The NPD Group.
The company surveyed 3,258 members of its online consumer panel who were pre-identified as owners of portable devices such as PlayStation Portable (PSP), Nintendo DS, iPods, iPhones and other smartphones.
Smartphone owners showed the highest increase in usage, with 46% claiming to use the device more than in the previous three months. The primary purpose for use is still communications features, but more users also report playing games, with iPhone users reporting the greatest increase in gaming.
Music was the top purchase/download for all devices, with users reporting an average of between 4.2 and six purchases in a typical month.
The top location for use of the devices was in-home, which, according to NPD, may indicate they are competing with stationary entertainment for users’ time.
