Online DVD rental pioneer Netflix Sept. 23 said it inked separate streaming deals for new and catalog content with CBS Television Network and ABC Television Group, the latter owned by The Walt Disney Co.
Los Gatos, Calif.-based Netflix, which claims a digital library of 12,000 titles, next month will begin offering free streams from current-season episodes of “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” to its DVD subscribers.
Episodes from “CSI: Miami,” “CSI: New York” and “NCIS” are available this week. Episodes from FBI drama “Numbers” will be available in October.
Other CBS content available at Netflix this fall includes episodes from the first two seasons of “Jericho” and classic TV programs “Star Trek,” “MacGyver” and “Family Ties.”
Netflix members can watch free streams on a PC or TV via a set-top player by Roku. The rental company this fall will also offer streams via Microsoft’s Xbox 360 game console and LG Electronics’ BD300 Blu-ray Disc player.
The Disney Channel agreement includes original series “Hannah Montana,” with Miley Cyrus, as well as “Wizards of Waverly Place” and “The Suite Life on Deck,” the latter a spin-off of “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody,” which has its TV premiere Sept. 26.
“Hannah Montana” episodes will be available to Netflix members online only beginning in November.
“We have a shared interest in granting fans expanded access to and strengthening the networks’ key shows,” said Robert Kyncl, VP of content acquisition at Netflix.
