Apple iPad Sales Top 3 Million Units

22 Jun, 2010 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Apple Inc. June 22 said it has sold 3 million iPad tablet computers since the device’s launch in April.

Priced from $499, iPad users can browse the Web, read and send e-mail, view and share photos, watch high-definition videos (including Netflix movies), play music, play games and read electronic books. The device has more than 11,000 unique apps, in addition to accommodating more than 225,000 apps total on the App Store.

With consumer demand exceeding production estimates, Apple has had to delay launch of the iPad overseas reportedly due to problems with third-party manufacturers of the unit’s 10-inch display screen.

LG Display, Samsung Electronics and Seiko Epson Corp., the three contracted manufacturers of the iPad and iPhone display, have had trouble generating enough of the larger screen sizes, according to a Bloomberg News report.

“We’re working hard to get this … product into the hands of even more people around the world, including those in nine more countries next month,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs, in a statement.
