Recent airplane mishaps, such as the Hudson River landing, have heightened interest in airline safety. E1 Entertainment’s new two-DVD set Mayday: Air Disasters ($24.98) presents the stories of flights that weren’t so lucky.
The eye-opening six-episode series presents reconstructions of doomed airplane flights, rounded out with interviews from survivors and family members, and investigations of the accidents. Causes range from bad weather to pilot error to electrical failures and other design flaws.
These scenarios could scare the crap out of some viewers who have to fly. But hopefully the episodes will offer reassurance that aircraft designers are learning from their mistakes and building safer and stronger planes.
