Stars Richard “Dick” Simmons.
Fans of old-school adventure stories should find something to like in “Sergeant Preston of the Yukon,” a 1950s TV version of the 1938-55 radio drama “Challenge of the Yukon.”
The series was something of a straight-laced cross between “The Lone Ranger” and “Lassie.” Episodes feature Richard “Dick” Simmons as Sgt. Preston, a Canadian Mountie who, along with his dog, King, keeps the peace and solves crimes in the Yukon territory during the gold rush of 1898.
The DVD set includes 33 color episodes from the 1955-56 season. The picture quality is quite good despite a few film-degradation artifacts.
The show’s simple storylines and moral platitudes make the DVD ideal for kids and nostalgia buffs.
