My Life in Ruins takes Nia Vardalos from her big fat Greek family to a group of big fat tourists in Greece, where she plays ex-pat tour guide Georgia. The result is a grandma-approved, by-the-numbers comedy.

Georgia has been on the run from real life as a professor, shuffling tourists around Greece, trying to educate them about the wonders of the ancient civilization. The sweaty travellers roll their eyes at Georgia’s musty trivia, bickering, cracking jokes and looking for ice cream at every conceivable moment.

Georgia, meanwhile, has become outright hateful toward the tourists, frustrated by a lack of either sex or job offers. Even her creepy-hot tour bus driver can’t seem to get a rise out of Georgia.

The message works — stop trying to control every detail of your life and sit back and enjoy the scenery.

Some critics found the stereotypes of obnoxious Americans, desperate cougars, horny gays and drunk Aussies to be offensive. Please! These limp caricatures couldn’t ruffle the most politically correct New Yorker reader — it’s nothing edgier than you’ll see on network sitcoms at any given moment.
