Management is a low key, funny and incredibly likeable rom-com that is ideal even for viewers who despise such things.
Slacker Mike (Steve Zahn) works at his parents’ hotel, basically hanging out, doing yoga and working his bumbling charm on their female guests. No-nonsense Sue (Jennifer Aniston), who sells bland paintings to hotels for a living, swings through town, and Mike is smitten.
Randomly, Mike’s attempts at courtship (“you have a great butt”) go better than anticipated. But Sue isn’t so sure about letting this lovable loser into her life.
Aniston, who doesn’t get nearly enough credit for doing terrific indies such as Friends With Money alongside Hollywood fare such as He’s Just Not That Into You, is at her snarky best playing tight-assed Sue.
She has always succeeded in breathing life into characters in mundane situations, from her waitress in Office Space to her cashier in The Good Girl, and Sue is no different. Zahn, always a pleasure, makes Mike’s ridiculous attempts to woo Sue hilariously awkward but weirdly touching.
The seemingly mismatched actors actually have wonderful chemistry, and they, along with some nice supporting roles from the likes of Woody Harrelson as Sue’s yogurt exec ex, avoid what could have been a rote genre exercise with plenty of “Office”-style uncomfortable laughs.
