This Danish thriller with a deceptively cute title shatters all expectations of a sweet love story with the opening scene.

The beginning starts with the end: Jonas is lying in a pool of his own blood on the street. There’s no clue as to how he got there or whether he’ll live.

Jonas is a crime-scene photographer, living a normal and seemingly happy life with his attractive wife and two young kids. One day, his car stalls, partially blocking the road, and causes an accident between two other cars. One of the cars is carrying the mentally unstable Julia, who has just returned from backpacking in Vietnam.

Full of guilt, Jonas goes to the hospital where she lies in a coma. Julia’s family assumes he is Sebastian, a man that Julia had been dating in Vietnam. Jonas keeps quiet, rather than upset them with the truth.

Eventually, Jonas involves himself deeper into the mystery of Julia’s life. Revealing any more would take away from the film’s exhilarating ride.

Just Another Love Story was written and directed by Ole Bornedal, who wrote and directed the 1997 cult classic Nightwatch. Fans of European thrillers such as Tell No One or With a Friend Like Harry … will enjoy this one, which was a Sundance Jury Prize nominee last year.
