Some say every rock star wants to be an actor. Flying By is country star Billy Ray Cyrus’ crack at starring in a feature film, “Hannah Montana” aside.

Cyrus plays George, a family man and real estate developer whose business is facing some tough times. His passion is music, which doesn’t agree with his icy wife, Pam (Heather Locklear).

After going to his 25th high-school reunion, he starts playing with his old teenage band for fun. As the band gathers steam playing in local bars, Pam fumes over her husband’s musical interests, thinking he’s going through a mid-life crisis. However, his teenage daughter, the vibrant Ellie, thinks it’s kind of cool, and his feisty mom (Patricia Neal) encourages him to do something for himself.

George increasingly enjoys his time with the band and begins to rethink his stressed marriage and job. But even the band has its tension. Guitarist Willy (also a real-life musician) is the angry guy who drinks too much and butts heads with George on nearly everything.

As the band gets a lucky break and a shot to go on tour, George has to make some tough decisions about his marriage and career.

There are no big surprises in the plot, and George and Pam were pretty one-dimensional characters, making it difficult to like either of them much. The rest of the cast, however, added the needed color and spunk that makes this film enjoyable to watch.

This one is great for fans of Cyrus. The film features a lot of scenes of him performing some blues and rock classics as well as some original songs he wrote.
