The BBC’s “Fawlty Towers” is considered one of the most influential Britcoms of all time, and yet surprisingly it lasted only 12 episodes. That’s just the British way.
This remastered DVD re-release of the show includes new interviews with much of the cast and new commentaries by co-creator John Cleese, who played put-upon hotelier Basil Fawlty. (In one new interview, guest star David Kelly calls Basil Fawlty the funniest character on TV ever.) Each week features Basil trying to save his hotel from the riffraff who insist upon staying there.
Several extras were originally included on the 2001 DVD set. The most notable among them is listed as the “Torquay Tourist Office,” which offers a profile of the Hotel Gleneagles in Torquay, England, which served as the inspiration for the series and its characters.
There are also (out of date) cast biographies and 2001 interviews with Cleese, Andrew Sachs (who played Spanish waiter Manuel) and Prunella Scales (who played Basil’s wife).
