This film by director John Harrison is based on Clive Barker’s Books of Blood short-story collection.

Paranormal expert and author Mary Florescu (Sophie Ward) sets out to prove the paranormal history of a home in Edinburgh, Scotland, that is supposedly haunted by the dead. She enlists the aid of university student Simon McNeal (Jonas Armstrong) after she discovers he has experienced ESP since childhood. Their relationship develops as the secrets of the house are revealed.

The premise is intriguing, the special effects are surprisingly good and the setting is believably creepy and dark. The few genuine scares are actually thanks to the musical score and sound effects (a well-timed thunder clap still makes me jump).

And while the script leaves quite a bit to be desired, the acting isn’t bad — plus Jonas Armstrong isn’t exactly hard on the eyes.
