Street 9/8/09
Family Musical
$29.99 DVD

The biggest difference between this new DVD edition of Bedknobs and Broomsticks and the 2001 30th anniversary release is a special-effects featurette hosted by Jennifer Stone from Disney’s “Wizards of Waverly Place.” (There’s also a Blu-ray Disc tutorial hosted by the kids from Disney’s “The Suite Life.”)

The disc also includes the deleted song “A Step in the Right Direction” (culled from what looks like the 25th anniversary laserdisc), the “Music Magic: The Sherman Brothers” featurette about the music in the movie, and the short “Portobello Road” recording session that also appeared on the 30th anniversary edition.

While the Disney Channel star additions are obviously a ploy to market the “Wizards” and “Suite Life” series, the special-effects featurette also offers an interesting look at the movie that should entertain kids and offer perspective on the 1971 classic, which won an Oscar for its visual effects.

For families that don’t have Bedknobs, the “Enchanted Musical Edition” is a good buy. It’s an entertaining film — one of my favorites — that holds up well with kids today. It’s got catchy songs (it’s hard not to repeat that chant “Treguna, Mekoides, Trecorum, Satis, Dee”), and though it’s one of the lesser-known Disney classics, it doesn’t disappoint.
