NPD: Mobile Gaming Up for Kids

10 Sep, 2013 By: Chris Tribbey

Since 2011 the way children are playing games has shifted dramatically, with those younger than 18 spending almost as much time on mobile games as they do on consoles and computers, according to research from The NPD Group.

Fifty-three percent of mobile device users under 18 said they are spending more time playing on those devices compared to last year, with kids ages 12 to 17 reportedly spending seven hours a week gaming on mobile devices, up from five hours a week in 2011.

“Kids embrace change, adopting new devices and technologies, for the experience of gaming and accessing other entertainment content and it is critical to understand the current mindset of the highly engaged 2- to 17-year-old gamer,” said Liam Callahan, industry analyst for NPD. “Kids are engaged with mobile devices as less expensive tablets and an increasing amount of hand-me-down phones create greater accessibility to these platforms than before.”
