Magic Ruby Creates Second-Screen App for ‘Wizards vs. Aliens’

3 Jun, 2013 By: Chris Tribbey

Second-screen technology company Magic Ruby has created what it says is the first synchronized second-screen experience for a children’s show in the United States.

The app for “Wizards vs. Aliens” on Hub Network — exclusively for the iPad — provides additional content to go with the broadcast of the series, including information about the story not available anywhere else.

There are also interactive polls, quizzes, collectibles, photos and more. There’s also an e-commerce function that allows kids to send wish lists to parents, asking for T-shirts, hats, puzzles and other merchandise.

“FremantleMedia has been a pioneer in the second-screen experience for some of the biggest entertainment shows in the world, such as ‘American Idol’ and ‘The X Factor,’ in turn making them two of the most socially relevant shows,” said Nicholas Dale, senior manager of interactive and mobile for FremantleMedia, which produced the show. “With today’s youth utilizing mobile technology at an increasing rate, we’re thrilled to now be the leader in bringing a second-screen experience to the kids’ market.”

The series, which originally debuted in the United Kingdom, airs weekly on Saturdays in the United States at 7:30 p.m. ET.

“We believe this first-of-its-kind app is the perfect vehicle to immerse fans more deeply into the ‘Wizards vs. Aliens’ universe,” said Tom Engdahl, president and CEO of Magic Ruby.
