Haier Gets Movie Downloads

13 Jul, 2010 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Sonic Solutions July 13 said it signed a deal with Chinese household appliance manufacturer Haier America to include its RoxioNow movie download technology in a line of unnamed new Blu-ray Disc players and HDTVs.

Novato, Calif.-based Sonic has been aggressively marketing its “Powered by RoxioNow” platform that enables transactional downloading of Hollywood movies and TV shows to PCs, connected TVs, set-top DVRs, Blu-ray players, smartphones and mobile media devices.

The platform has enabled retailers and consumer electronics companies such as Best Buy, Blockbuster, Dell, HP, Kmart and Sears, offer consumers the ability to rent and purchase entertainment on their favorite device and store content on a virtual online locker.

Haier in January at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas made news when it displayed a prototype HDTV that received its electricity wirelessly.

“With its broad placement at major retail outlets, Haier will help to significantly raise awareness for over-the-top video services and further fuel consumer adoption,” said Mark Ely, EVP of strategy, with Sonic Solutions.
