Dell Launches Movie Download Service

7 Jan, 2011 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Dell has become the latest consumer electronics manufacturer to bow a movie-download service powered by Sonic Solutions’ ubiquitous RoxioNow software.

Dubbed VideoStage, the movie rental and digital acquisition platform is part of the computer manufacturer’s Dell Stage user interface initially offered on the Dell Inspiron duo convertible tablet and the Dell Streak 5, the company’s 5-inch Android-based tablet.

Dell plans to incorporate VideoStage, along with MusicStage and BookStage, in a host of devices throughout the year. Initial products are on display at the Dell booth at the International CES through Jan. 9 in Las Vegas.

"With applications in mobile, tablet, laptop and desktop environments, Dell Stage provides a perfect platform … to deliver premium content across a diverse set of devices," said Mark Ely, president of strategy for Sonic Solutions. "By working with Dell, we continue to prove that RoxioNow provides the secure, robust infrastructure needed to deliver internet-enabled content, like movies and TV shows, to the masses."

Russ Ray, product manager at Dell, said VideoStage offers an ideal venue to manage the growing interest in Internet streaming and on-demand video viewing.

Dell joins a growing list of manufacturers, studios and retailers offering digital entertainment delivery, including Best Buy, Amazon, Walmart/Vudu, Blockbuster, HP, Intel, Lionsgate, and Sears/Kmart, among others.
