As Christmas movies go, this new direct-to-video installment in the “Air Bud” and “Buddies” series is pretty standard. It best suits kids 8 and younger.
Santa and his best friend, talking puppy Paws, take a trip to New York City after an “ambassador” Santa who owned a toy shop passes away. In a mishap, Santa loses his memory and Paws hooks up with some orphans (a not-so-subtle homage to Annie) to find Santa. The Jolly Old Elf is unwittingly playing himself at the toy store (see Miracle on 34th Street), but with the help of Paws, the orphans and some city friends, regains his memory and finds his way back to the North Pole. In the process, the orphans defeat their evil mistress and find a home (sound familiar?).
The child actors in the feature are particularly talented, as is the whole cast, who do an admirable job giving life to some rather cardboard characters.
The title includes some catchy (though not so original) tunes. They are hummable and are included in the sing-along feature on the disc. Other extras include an animated pop-up book, a music video starring tween favorite Debby Ryan (Disney’s “Suite Life on Deck”) and deleted scenes.
Kids familiar with the “Air Bud” and “Buddies” series will be attracted to this title. Ultimately, this is an enjoyable holiday film that will please the younger set, though it won’t satisfy most preteens.
