22 Feb, 2012 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Disney Media Distribution, a distribution arm under The Walt Disney Co., has signed a streaming deal with a Chinese video-on-demand and pay-per-view operator.

Under terms of the deal, Disney movies such as Oscar-nominated War Horse, The Muppets, Cars 2, The Lion King, Mary Poppins, Beauty and the Beast and The Help (DreamWorks SKG), among others, would be made available by YOU On Demand Holdings Inc. for transactional VOD (rental) and subscription VOD (streaming) in China.

“We are very proud to work with [Disney] in bringing the best in home entertainment to China,” Shane McMahon, CEO of YOU On Demand, said in a statement. “Disney films define quality family entertainment, and we're thrilled that YOU On Demand will be their showcase to the world's largest television audience.”

The company (www.yod.com) is headquartered in New York, with its China headquarters in Beijing.

China Feb. 17 announced an easing of restrictions on the distribution of Hollywood and other foreign theatrical movies. The communist country, with more than 2.1 billion moviegoers, upped by 50% the quota of titles allowed into the country from the current limit of 20 movies annually.
