Disney to Bow Family Movie Subscription VOD Service23 Aug, 2010 By: Erik Gruenwedel
The Walt Disney Co. said Sept. 2 through Sept. 6 it will offer a free preview to a nascent cable-based subscription video-on-demand (VOD) service catering to family-themed catalog movies.
While studios and cable operators are collectively pushing transactional VOD movies day-and-date with DVD/Blu-ray Disc releases due to their higher margins than physical-store and kiosk-based rentals, this marks the first time a studio is actively marketing a subscription-based VOD service.
Dubbed “Disney Family Movies,” the subscription VOD service (www.disneyfamilymovies.com) will be available through cable and telecommunications operators Comcast, Charter, Cox, AT&T U-verse, Suddenlink and Verizon FiOS, in addition to select Avail TVN affiliates.
Hosted by actress Phylicia Rashad (“The Cosby Show”), both classic and contemporary Disney films will be cycled through the service on a monthly basis and include favorites such as Pocahontas, Muppet Treasure Island, Disney-Pixar’s A Bug's Life and animated short "Monster Truck Mater," which features the voice of Larry the Cable Guy.
