ABC Studios Sends Four Shows to DVD in May and June28 Mar, 2012 By: John Latchem
Most TV series aren’t released on DVD for months after their current season airs, with studios timing the release to the airing of the new season. Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment is playing around with that strategy a bit by slating four current ABC series for DVD release in May and June, mere weeks after their current seasons conclude.
First up, May 22 (order date April 10), is The River: The Complete First Season. “The River,” created by Oren Peli of Paranormal Activity and executive produced by Steven Spielberg, is a supernatural “found footage” horror series set in the Amazon, and concluded its eight-episode run March 20. The two-DVD set is listed at $29.99 and will include extras such as deleted scenes.
June 12 (order date May 1) sees the DVD release of two shows that are still airing, “GCB” and “Missing,” and one that hasn’t even debuted yet, “Scandal.”
The first season of “GCB” (based on the book Good Christian Bitches) will finish airing May 6. The three-DVD set will include all 10 episodes for $39.99. The show stars Leslie Bibb, Kristin Chenoweth, Annie Potts, Jennifer Aspen, Miriam Shor, Marisol Nichols, David James Elliott, Mark Deklin and Brad Beyer, and follows a formerly rich widow who has to return home to Dallas to make a new life among all the women she used to torment in high school.
“Missing” stars Ashley Judd as a former CIA agent in search of her son, who has disappeared from an overseas internship. The three-DVD set of the first season includes all 10 episodes and such extras as interviews with Judd and the show’s creators for $39.99. The current season finishes airing May 17.
“Scandal,” which premieres April 5 and runs through May 17, stars Kerry Washington as a former White House media relations consultant who runs a professional crisis management firm for America’s high-powered elite. The two-DVD set includes all seven episodes, plus deleted scenes and other extras for $29.99.
