Starz Bows Movie Streaming Service with AT&T U-verse TV

Starz Entertainment Dec. 17 said it signed a TV Everywhere agreement with AT&T U-verse, which includes the launch of Movieplex Play, a subscription video-on-demand service featuring about 200 movie selections per month.

The AT&T U-verse TV debut of Movieplex Play is Starz Entertainment’s first SVOD service available to authenticated AT&T U-verse subscribers.

Movieplex, Starz Play and Encore Play represent three Web-based service enabling Starz’ authenticated subscribers access to movies on the PC, Mac or portable devices such as iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. The services are not available as stand-alone SVOD entities such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Instant Video and Hulu Plus.

Starz has up marketing on-demand access of its original and third-party content after SVOD license deal with Netflix ended in February.

Starz Play offers about 400 monthly selections, including 300 movies comprising first-run films from Disney (Cars 2, The Muppets) and Sony (The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo, 21 Jump Street) and other great films from a wide selection of Hollywood studios, and 100 episodes of exclusive STARZ Original series, including “Spartacus,” “Magic City,” and “Boss.”

Encore Play offers about 900 monthly selections, with 300 movies and select originals (Midnight in Paris, Jurassic Park, The Smurfs, “Titanic: Blood and Steel,” “Moby Dick”).

Movieplex Play (True Lies, The Rock. American Graffiti, Mr. Holland’s Opus, Philadelphia) offers about 200 movies every month.

“The Play services have been warmly received in the marketplace and are in great demand from our distributors,” said Ed Huguez, president of affiliate distribution for Starz Entertainment. “The Play platforms are an exciting way for premium subscribers to enjoy the great depth and breadth of programming offered across the three flagship services from Starz.”
