‘SpongeBob’ to Flood Twitter7 Jul, 2011 By: Chris Tribbey
Nickelodeon’s “SpongeBob SquarePants” is going where no sponge — or story — has gone before.
From July 12 to 15, an original story of the popular animation will run on Twitter, with multiple tweets and images running each day to carry the storyline. Nickelodeon says it’s the first time a well-known property has been adapted for the social media service.
“SpongeBob’s fan base is so broad that about a third of its audience is adults, so we wanted to extend the show’s magic to new places like Twitter so those fans can experience it,” said Roland Poindexter, SVP of animation and current series for Nickelodeon.
SpongeBob already has 25 million-plus Facebook fans, and Twitter was the next logical venue, Poindexter said.
“We hope his Twitter debut will drum up some extra excitement for all the people who love him and the show," he said.
The episode, “The Ice Race Cometh: A Twitter-Tale,” sees SpongeBob and friends preparing for The Bikini Bottom Great Sleigh Race. The episode serves as a prequel to "Frozen Face Off," a new “SpongeBob” TV episode premiering July 15 on Nickelodeon.
This isn’t a social-media first for “SpongeBob”: In January Nickelodeon used Facebook to premiere the episode “Trenchbillies,” in advance of its network debut.
