Samsung TVs, Blu-ray Players Get FiOS App7 Aug, 2012 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Samsung Electronics America Aug. 7 said it will begin including direct access to Verizon Communication’s FiOS TV through an embedded app in new smart TVs and connected Blu-ray Disc players.
The app allows subscribers of Verizon’s fiber-optic network direct access to 26 FiOS TV channels and more than 20,000 Flex View on-demand movies and TV shows without the need of a set-top box. Verizon has more than 4.5 million FiOS TV subscribers.
Samsung said the announcement underscores the consumer electronics manufacturer and Verizon’s commitment to TV Everywhere — the industry initiative intended to deliver repurposed and original content to subscribers anywhere on demand. Verizon is the first TV provider in the U.S. to offer video content directly through Samsung’s Smart Hub App Store.
Samsung’s Flex View platform allows subs to buy or rent movies and TV shows to watch on the TV, PC, mobile device or compatible Samsung TVs and Blu-ray players.
The free FiOS TV app has security options, including PIN access, to restrict mature content as well as a purchase PIN requirement for authorization of any rental and purchases of VOD content through the application. The application also offers traditional features such as closed captioning, help and FAQs.
“TV Everywhere apps like this new FiOS TV app push the boundaries of content delivery to meet consumer demand for more control, choice and access to their favorite content,” said Eric Anderson, VP of content and product solutions with Samsung Electronics America. “By broadening accessibility through Smart TV applications, Verizon FiOS is providing consumers more flexibility for where they want to locate their Samsung Smart TV within their home without the need for a set-top box.”
