Rovi Bows Streaming Platform for Belkin

6 Sep, 2012 By: Erik Gruenwedel, Chris Tribbey

Rovi Corp. Sept. 6 said it launched a set-top box with Belkin enabling viewers to stream content from their home theater on their personal and mobile devices. Rovi made the announcement at the IBC confab in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Based in Los Angeles, Belkin manufacturers wireless home networking and entertainment platforms for mobile and at-home use.

Dubbed @TV, the Belkin box allows users to navigate through Rovi’s collection of metadata on TV, movies and celebrities and find the content they want to watch, connect and watch it immediately, or record it remotely.

In addition to the TV program and schedule information, Belkin's @TV media streaming box offers images, biographies, reviews, descriptors and award information culled from the Rovi Video platform. The product also uses Hot Pick Lists curated by the Rovi editorial team to recommend content to its users.

@TV supports Wi-Fi or 3G/4G networks, works with both standard- and high-definition programming and can connect and control multiple sources, such as a digital cable box, satellite receiver or connected Blu-ray Disc player. The channel guide makes it simple to control live or recorded content directly from a mobile device.

Rovi Video is a component of Rovi Entertainment Data Solutions, a database that also includes metadata on music, books and games. The entertainment data ranges from basic biographies and reviews to high quality images, cross linking data, celebrity Twitter handles and links to Web video.

“We want to give our customers the complete TV experience with @TV,” said Jamie Elgie, senior director of product management at Belkin. “This starts with the ability to discover content on an integrated channel guide. We've extended this experience to include advanced, eye-catching imagery and information to reflect the highly visual and engaging environment of today’s media world.”
