NextGuide Adds Amazon Prime Instant Video

12 Oct, 2012 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Virtual TV guide software developer Dijit Media Oct. 12 said its NextGuide app for the iPad now includes Amazon Prime Instant Video to go along with Hulu Plus, iTunes, Netflix and live TV.

The iPad, in addition to other tablets, is increasingly being used as a second screen by TV viewers as a means to find additional information about a program, actor or previous episode. The tablet, with its larger screen and portability, is seen as successor to laptops and smartphones when searching for information on a TV program.

The free app, which utilizes user’s video tastes garnered through Facebook and other social media to make video recommendations, also offers a virtual guide that combines listings from any live TV service with movies and TV shows that can be found on transactional video-on-demand and subscription VOD platforms.

Programming can searched, bookmarked with alerts, and one-click viewing with appropriate authentication and/or payment.

In addition, the touch screen interface on the iPad allows NextGuide to offer “two-finger” swipe within showcards, enlarging and minimizing images; cast and crew tabs for any movie or TV show; easy to add genres, custom genres, and trending topics, and improved recommendation algorithms.

NextGuide lets users create video categories based on favorite actor, hometown, sports team, in addition to typical genres such as comedy, drama, action, etc. The app alerts a user when a topic tagged in their profile is on TV, including favorite actors, bands, teams, live concerts, sporting events, interviews, and appearances, among other criteria.

“It’s really a great experience to browse all providers simultaneously and to search for shows and actually know where they are watchable,” said NextGuide developer Jeremy Toeman in a statement.
