You On Demand Holdings Inc., a Chinese video-on-demand and pay-per-view service based in New York, April 25 said it signed a distribution deal with Miramax to distribute the studio’s titles for transactional VOD in the communist country.
Titles in the deal range from Oscar-winning There Will Be Blood and Chicago to pop culture classics Pulp Fiction and the “Scream” series, among others.
The Chinese online video market is growing with revenue surpassing $234 million in Q3 of 2011 – a 139% year-over-year increase, according to research firm Enfodesk. The market is epected to top $1.3 billion by 2016.
By comparison, the U.S. online video market reached $1.55 billion in 2011, according to DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group.
Miramax joins Warner, Disney, Lionsgate, Magnolia, K2 Communications, Gravitas Ventures, American Media Works and Film Buff in inking VOD deals with You On Demand.
“The Miramax library includes some of the best-known, award-winning and critically acclaimed films Hollywood has to offer,” said Shane McMahon, chairman and CEO of YOU On Demand. “We are very excited to add Miramax films to the YOU On Demand platform.”
