Miramax Movies Streaming in Scandinavia

14 Nov, 2012 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Miramax has signed a license agreement with Stockholm-based C More Entertainment to stream its portfolio of 700 movies in the Nordic region, including Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland.

Santa Monica, Calif.-based Miramax’s move comes on the heels of Netflix and HBO bowing service in the region — the latter through HBO Nordic, the Time Warner-owned premium TV channel’s first foray into subscription video-on-demand service.

The Scandinavia market reportedly comprises about 10 million broadband-connected households.

Miramax library titles available in the deal include There Will Be Blood, The Cider House Rules, Chocolat, Chicago, Jackie Brown, The Hours and Scream. Under the agreement, all titles will be seen on C More’s linear channels, and will also be available to subscribers of C More Play, the Web-based streaming service available on connected computers, tablets and smartphones.

“C More is a strong platform serving the Nordic region, and we are very pleased to add C More to our list of outstanding international partners who are bringing Miramax films to audiences in traditional and new ways,” Beth Minehart, SVP of global digital at Miramax, said in a statement.

Since being acquired from The Walt Disney Co. by investor group Colony Capital, Miramax has aggressively sought to mine incremental revenue from its film catalog through domestic and foreign physical and digital distribution agreements.

Founded in 1979 by Bob and Harvey Weinstein, Miramax earlier this year signed digital distribution deals with Antena 3, a Spanish-based multiplatform entertainment distributor, and Demand Holdings, a Chinese VOD service. Miramax also has a physical media distribution agreement with Lionsgate.

Miramax and Lionsgate Nov. 20 will bow the Tarantino XX 8-Film Collection Blu-ray Disc boxed set also featuring two bonus discs with five hours of extras. The collection ($119.99) includes Reservoir Dogs, True Romance, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill Vol. 1, Kill Bill Vol. 2, Death Proof and Inglourious Basterds.
