Chinese VOD Service Gets Docs

7 Mar, 2012 By: Erik Gruenwedel

You On Demand, a Chinese pay-per-view distributor with offices in New York and Beijing, March 7 said it signed a deal to distribute select documentary films for transactional video-on-demand and subscription streaming in the communist country.

Oscar-nominated films include Dolphins, narrated by Pierce Brosnan with original music performed by Sting, Amazon, narrated by Linda Hunt, and The Living Sea, narrated by Oscar winner Meryl Streep.

“These giant-screen films look exceptional when delivered in HD and present another kind of film experience for our customers," said Shane McMahon, CEO of YOU On Demand.

The company last month inked a deal with Disney to stream Oscar-nominated War Horse, The Muppets, Cars 2, The Lion King, Mary Poppins, Beauty and the Beast and The Help (DreamWorks SKG), among others.

China recently announced an easing of restrictions on the distribution of Hollywood and other foreign theatrical movies. The communist country, with more than 2.1 billion moviegoers, upped by 50% the quota of titles allowed into the country from the current limit of 20 movies annually.
