Aereo Expands NYC Coverage, Launches Ad Campaign

Aereo TV, the New York subscription service that enables consumers to stream broadcast television via mini antennae to portable devices, Feb. 25 said is now available to 19 million people living in the New York City metropolitan region.

This includes 29 counties across New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. Previously, Aereo was only available to residents of NYC’s five boroughs. The announcement comes less than two months after Aereo said it plans to expand to 22 additional markets nationwide this year.

Aereo is currently supported on iPad, iPhone, Chrome, IE9, Firefox, Safari, Opera, Apple TV and Roku. No cable subscription is required to use Aereo and membership plans begin at $1 per day, $8 per month or $80 per year, and include a cloud-based DVR.

The service, which recently partnered with Bloomberg TV, remains embroiled in litigation with broadcasters and their corporate parents that are suing, claiming it illegally accesses their content, among other charges.

Aereo also began its first advertising campaign on NYC billboards, phone kiosks and at key city transit points, including waterways, commuter trains and transit hubs.
