Codeblack Slam Dunks With All Star Comedy Jam30 Jul, 2009 By: Angelique Flores
NBA star Shaquille O’Neal has teamed up with Codeblack Entertainment’s Jeff Clanagan to launch a new stand-up comedy series.
Codeblack’s inaugural installment of the “All-Star Comedy Jam” series, Shaq & Cedric the Entertainer Present: All Star Comedy Jam, bows Sept. 8 (prebook Aug. 11) at $19.99, distributed by Vivendi Entertainment.
Each program features stand-up from both veteran and emerging urban comics.
“The ‘All-Star Comedy Jam’ series is a collection of shows that will feature many different comedians,” Clanagan said. “Our goal is to build it into a major franchise so that we can eventually use the brand to give up-and-coming comedians a new platform.”
This first title will be hosted by Cedric the Entertainer, one of the Original Kings of Comedy known not only for his stand-up but also for his roles in Ice Age, Barbershop and Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins. The other comedians featured are Kevin Hart (Soul Plane), Tommy Davidson (“In Living Color”), Aries Spears (“Mad TV”) and DeRay Davis (“The Boondocks”).
The program, which was filmed in front of a live audience during All-Star Weekend in Phoenix, premiered June 17 on Showtime, kicking off the network’s “Laugh Out Loud” comedy initiative.
Among the extras on the DVD are the comedians preparing to go on stage, as well as interviews.
Comedians featured in the “All Star Comedy Jam” are handpicked by Cedrick and Shaq.
“Shaq is fully involved with the creative aspects of the program,” Clanagan said. “He gets involved with picking the comedians as well as promoting the shows and DVD.”
And he even takes a few jabs from the comedians.
“Shaq is a big fan of stand-up comedy, so we decided to create a brand under his name that will give comedians another opportunity to showcase themselves on TV and DVD,” said Clanagan, who has had a long relationship with the basketball giant.
The second installment of the series was filmed at the 13th annual American Black Film Festival June 26 in Miami. DL Hughley hosted the special, which featured Earthquake, Arnez J, Lavell Crawford and Melanie Comarcho. It will premiere on Showtime in January 2010 with a DVD release to follow.
Each installment will air on Showtime first and then follow with a DVD release.
The series aims to recapture the spirit of past successful franchises such as “The Kings of Comedy” tour.
“We are already established leaders in this space with Katt Williams and Steve Harvey, and this is a great addition to our stand up comedy repertoire,” said Soumya Sriraman, SVP of marketing for Vivendi.
