26 Jan, 2010 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Sonic Solutions Jan. 26 said it inked a deal with the largest Canadian theatrical distributor to begin offering its Roxio CinemaNow streaming software for a new download link at www.cineplex.com.

Under terms of the deal, Novato, Calif.-based Sonic will provide backend support for Cineplex Entertainment’s nascent movie download site. The Toronto-based company owns, leases or has a joint-venture interest in 128 theaters with 1,323 screens, serving more than 63 customers annually.

“Cineplex is already the No. 1 choice for out-of-home movie entertainment,” said Susan Mandryk, SVP of customer strategies at Cineplex Entertainment. “Now with the CinemaNow-powered digital entertainment services, we want to become their choice for an evening of entertainment at home.”

Roxio CinemaNow software is embedded in a number of consumer electronics products, PCs, connected TVs, set-top DVRs, Blu-ray Disc players, smartphones and mobile-media devices. The software enables third-party services to allow consumers to rent and purchase Hollywood movies from the Internet and play them on their favorite device.

The technology also powers digital entertainment distribution for related physical and online platforms branded by Best Buy and Blockbuster.
