CFO mum on updating status of digital rental joint venture with Redbox
Verizon Communications April 19 said it added 180,000 video subscribers to its FiOS TV platform in the first quarter (ended March 31).
Video subs represent consumers acquiring access to pay-TV channels such as HBO, Showtime and others. The increase continues offset declines in video subscribers among cable operators.
New York-based Verizon said it ended the quarter with 4.4 million FiOS video subscribers. FiOS video penetration was 32.3%, compared with 29.1% during the same period last year.
The average FiOS video sub's monthly bill topped $148.
In a call with analysts to discuss the results, CFO Fran Shammo, the only Verizon executive on the call, did not discuss or was not asked about the joint venture with Redbox announced last year.
The telco also added 193,000 FiOS Internet subs in the quarter, with 5 million subs who get their Web access through the telecommunications company.
FiOS services to consumer retail customers represented 63% of consumer wireline revenue in the first quarter of 2012.
